Dr. Joost VandeVondele is Deputy Director for science at the the Swiss National Supercomputing Center (CSCS) at ETHZ.
He ensures that CSCS develops and operates a High Performance Computing (HPC) and data research infrastructure that supports world-class science in Switzerland. He leads CSCS' Platform for Advanced Scientific Computing (PASC), is a member of the steering committee of the Swiss AI initiative and the executive board of the NCCR Marvel, and generally interfaces with the scientific communities. He served on the research and innovation advisory group (RIAG) of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking, lead in the PRACE 6IP project, and the European CoE MaX2. He is the head of the research infrastructure engineering unit. He started at CSCS as associate director in 2016, leading the scientific software and libraries (SSL) group.
Previously, he has been Assistant Professor of Nanoscale Simulations at the Department of Materials Science, ETHZ (2011-2016), and has been senior assistant at the univeristy of Zurich, (2005-2011). He has a MSc in engineering physics, obtained at the university of Ghent, Belgium, including a stay at EPFL. He obtained his PhD from the ETHZ in 2001, followed by stays as postdoctoral researcher at the university of Zurich, and as a Marie-Curie Fellow at the University of Cambridge, UK.
