Since 2016, Dr. Joost VandeVondele is part of the leadership of the Swiss National Supercomputing Center (CSCS) at ETHZ, as Deputy Director for Science.
He is the head of the research infrastructure engineering unit. He leads the Platform for Advanced Scientific Computing (PASC) in Switzerland, the forward-looking software solutions work of PRACE 6IP, and served on the research and innovation advisory group (RIAG) of the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking. He participates in the Swiss NCCR MARVEL and the European CoE MaX2, as well as various other projects. He started at CSCS as associate director in 2016, leading the scientific software and libraries (SSL) group.
Previously, he has been Assistant Professor of Nanoscale Simulations at the Department of Materials Science, ETHZ (2011-2016), and has been senior assistant at the univeristy of Zurich, (2005-2011). He has a MSc in engineering physics, obtained at the university of Ghent, Belgium, including a stay at EPFL. He obtained his PhD from the ETHZ in 2001, followed by stays as postdoctoral researcher at the university of Zurich, and as a Marie-Curie Fellow at the University of Cambridge, UK.
